First Nation‑operated Wyndham Garden Winnipeg to open in October
Dennis Meeches, president of Tribal Councils Investment Group, had announced the grand opening of Wyndham Garden Winnipeg hotel would take place on August 4, 2022. Due to supply chain disruptions, the grand opening has been rescheduled to October 5th.
Meeches refers to the new build as “a beautiful hotel and one of a kind in the city of Winnipeg.”
Referring to documents from Arrowhead Development Corp. the Long Plain First Nation sought to develop and operate Wyndham Garden Hotel, located at 480 Madison Street, Winnipeg, Man.
The Wyndham Garden Winnipeg includes a total of 132 guestrooms offering a variety of guestroom sizes and bed configurations appealing to both commercial and leisure guests.
A franchise agreement was made with Wyndham Hotels & Resorts which also provides marketing, loyalty program access, multi-channel distribution and sales expertise driving business to the property while a third-party management company will provide day-to-day on-site operational management, strategic planning and marketing and financial management expertise.
Wyndham Garden is a midscale hotel brand with hotels 119 hotels worldwide, while the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts brand family includes over 20 brands and 800,000 hotel rooms worldwide. The hotel is expected to cater to a variety of stakeholders and guests including the First Nations community visiting Winnipeg, commercial travellers conducting business in the area as well as leisure travellers whether individual travellers or groups visiting the city.
A significant economic impact is expected through the creation of direct employment as well as indirect employment via downstream suppliers and complementary services. Over a ten-year period, the hotel is expected to generate revenues of approximately $57 million.
The class B design-build budget developed by PCL Construction includes costs of $21.9 million for an 18-month window for design and construction with a grand opening within 20 months of project start.
