First Nations collaborate on new hotel development in Port Alberni

In a significant move to enhance local tourism infrastructure, three Vancouver Island First Nations—Tseshaht, Hupacasath, and Huu-ay-aht—have partnered to develop a new hotel in Port Alberni. The proposed Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham will be the city's first new hotel since 1980, as reported by Alberni Valley News.

The four-storey, 76-room hotel is planned for a location near the city's entrance, adjacent to the Walmart on Johnston Road. Patrick Schmidt, CEO of the Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses, presented the project to the City of Port Alberni's committee of the whole on January 14, 2025, seeking a letter of support to aid in grant funding applications.

"This project represents an opportunity to bring more tourism infrastructure to the community," Schmidt told the committee. He highlighted that the hotel will feature amenities such as a pool, hot tub, and a waterslide, the latter being a particularly anticipated addition.

The land subdivision near Walmart has been completed, with the sale expected to close by the end of January. Schmidt aims to secure development and building permits by February. "A project like this is expensive, so we've been trying to find ways to support the capital on it," he noted.

The committee recommended providing the requested letter of support, with the final decision pending at a future city council meeting. Councillor Charles Mealey expressed enthusiasm, stating, "This is big news. It's kind of a no-brainer in my opinion." Councillor Cindy Solda added, "I think it's a great opportunity for our community," referring to the hotel's location as the "worst-kept secret" in Port Alberni.

This development marks a milestone for Port Alberni, addressing a longstanding need for modern accommodations to support both tourism and local events.
