Hilton remains the only hospitality company recognized by DJSI, a ranking for corporate sustainability performance. The achievement reaffirms Hilton's commitment to Travel with Purpose, its environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy—and caps a landmark year for the hospitality leader as it continues to drive responsible travel and tourism forward across the industry.
“Hilton was founded on the belief that hospitality can be a powerful force for good, and that founding purpose still guides us today in the work we do to care for our communities, advance opportunity, and protect the environment,” says Katherine Lugar, executive vice president, corporate affairs, Hilton. “As we conclude this milestone year, Hilton’s inclusion as the only hospitality company on the Dow Jones World and North American Sustainability Indices—among many other moments of recognitions throughout the year—is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our team members.”
This recognition underscores Hilton’s science-based approach to measuring and reducing its environmental impact. Hilton was the first major hotel company to set science-based carbon targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Its award-winning, proprietary ESG management system, LightStay, measures performance and tracks progress towards its Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals across a global portfolio of nearly 7,400 hotels. Since its launch in 2009, LightStay data shows that Hilton’s global portfolio of hotels have reduced their carbon emissions intensity by 44 per cent and saved more than $1 billion in utility costs. The ranking also follows Hilton’s representation of the hospitality industry at the United Nations COP28 Climate Conference in Dubai where the company reaffirmed its commitment to reduce food waste leveraging data trends to scale meaningful action at hotels and across the industry.
Throughout the year, Hilton has continued to help improve the communities where it operates for those who live, work and travel in them. This work includes supporting community members in the aftermath of disasters in times of need; enabling guests to travel more sustainability; creating pathways to hospitality careers; and working to preserve the beautiful destinations where Hilton operates.
