This new Canadian award was created to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
The Honourable Janet Austin, lieutenant governor of British Columbia, nominated Cretney for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to Canada’s hospitality and tourism industry. On August 27, Cretney accepted the award from Austin and David Eby, the premier of British Columbia.
Cretney has been in public service at B.C. Pavilion Corporation (PavCo) for the last decade and a half, first as the general manager for the Vancouver Convention Centre, before being named chief operating officer in 2013 and president and CEO in 2014. Before his roles with PavCo, he had a successful career in the hospitality industry, including leadership roles with Vancouver’s Marriott Pinnacle Hotel and the Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa.
The Coronation Medal, a Canadian honour created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, was launched by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, governor general of Canada, recognizing those who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province.
Austin has nominated a selection of exceptional British Columbians for the medal, with subsequent approval by the Chancellery of Honours in Ottawa. Across the country, the medal will be awarded to 30,000 deserving individuals, and is the first Canadian honour to mark a coronation.
