The Guide has presented its very first MICHELIN Key selection dedicated to North-American hotels (located in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.) The MICHELIN Keys highlight the properties in the Guide’s hotel selection that offer the most exceptional stays.
The Guide's hotel selection provides users with recommendations for a complete travel experience. Awarded by the MICHELIN Guide inspection team based on anonymous stays/visits independently of existing labels, tourism stars and pre-established quotas—the MICHELIN Keys are a new international benchmark. They aim to guide travelers to accommodations that stand out for their unique hospitality concept, distinctive character, warm welcome and extremely high level of service.
This announcement comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of its hotel selection. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in Canada includes a total of 2 Three Key hotels, 8 Two Key hotels, and 23 One Key hotels.
Canada highlights:
Two hotels earned its top honour, Three MICHELIN Keys, in Canada: Fogo Island Inn, Joe Batt’s Arm, N.L. and Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, Tofino, B.C. One of the most famous high-design hotels in the world, Fogo Island Inn is located on a tiny island off the coast of Newfoundland. An ultra-modern reinterpretation of traditional, utilitarian Maritimes architecture, this hotel is home to 29 rooms with spectacular views—and offers excursions that range from whale-watching to iceberg tours.
A secluded outpost set deep in the wilderness of British Columbia, reachable only by boat or seaplane, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers 25 canvas tents—the first property of this kind to be awarded Three MICHELIN Keys in the world. All are furnished with handcrafted and vintage antique furniture and sit on wood platforms connected by a series of cedar plank walkways.
The Many Key Hotels of Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City
Exceptional outposts from city newcomers like the Ace and 1 Hotel Toronto, as well established players like the Four Seasons, all earned recognition on the list of Key hotels.
An impressive number of Key hotels in other Canadian cities shine for their historic relevance. In Montreal, fully contemporary Key hotels like Le Mount Stephen and Le Place d'Armes Hotel & Suites are set within gorgeous 19th-century facades. In Quebec City, the Auberge Saint-Antoine, a three centuries-old trio of sites with artifacts from the 1600s on display throughout its spaces.
